Creating on Bundjalung Country with Jason King
.jpg)
“That connection we have to Country here — I want that to echo throughout the world,” says Bundjalung artist and storyteller Jason King, standing where the land meets the sea at Fingal Head.
The ochres in his hands carry the colours of Country — red for strength, yellow for warmth, white for knowledge.
Through art, Jason translates these elements into story, inviting others to learn and to create beside him. On Bundjalung Country, painting is more than an expression; it’s ceremony - a dialogue between land, language, and belonging.
In partnership with Reveling, Jason opens this experience to guests through the Dreamtime Art Trail.
This journal explores Jason's story.
“”
“Visitors can already see the beauty of this place — but I want them to feel that deeper connection, to take a little bit of that magic with them when they go home.”
Jason King
Belonging to the Boruga
Growing up on the banks of the Tweed River and the beaches of Fingal Head, Jason always felt called to the water. Bundjalung people are saltwater people, and Jason feels a profound sense of belonging whenever he stands on the sand with the Boruga (ocean) beside him.
“The ocean is what connects us,” he explains. “When I’m on the beach with the Boruga right here, I know I belong.”
.jpg)
Within his culture, the dramatic basalt columns of Booning bah – the Echidna Head – and Jungarra ngariyan (Cook Island), the dancing ground of the pelican, are not just landmarks; they are rooted in ancient creation stories, and exist as anchors that remind him of his place in the world.
.jpg)
.jpg)
This saltwater identity flows into his teaching. Jason wants visitors to feel more than just the aesthetic beauty of this coast; he wants them to experience its spirit. “Visitors already see the beauty here,” he says. “What I want them to leave with is a deeper connection – a little bit of that magic you feel when you understand the stories woven through this Country.”
Using Country to Paint Country
Jason’s artwork emerges directly from the ground he walks on. He collects ochres and clays seeping from the earth, grinding them and mixing them with water to create the palette for his paintings.
.jpg)
.jpg)
“I honour my Country by using it in my art,” he explains. The dot‑painting style he employs originated in central Australia, but he adapts it to tell Bundjalung stories of river pathways, meeting places and animal tracks.
For Jason, story always comes first. “I always see the story before I create the symbols,” he says. “Then it’s just a matter of using these materials to portray that story.”
.jpg)
.jpg)
By naming each colour and motif in Bundjalung as he teaches, he gives voice back to the land and deepens his own language journey.
Working outdoors is essential to his process. Jason prefers to paint outside, where he can feel the wind on his skin and the heat of the sun on his face. Creating in the open keeps him attuned to the environment that inspires his art.
As he has grown older, his connection has shifted from a purely physical relationship – climbing trees and exploring bush tracks – to a more spiritual one. Learning his language and understanding the deeper meanings behind songs and ceremonies has, in his words, “shaped my path forward.”
.jpg)

Passing on Bundjalung Culture
Bundjalung culture is part of the oldest living culture on the planet, and Jason carries that lineage with pride. Even though colonisation has taken much away, he believes there is still a wealth of knowledge “waking up.” As an Aboriginal person on Country, he feels a responsibility to activate that ancient knowledge and share it with others.
“Our knowledge is meant to be shared,” he says. “I’m honouring my old people when I share it.” He wants visitors to leave with a piece of Bundjalung spirit and to carry those conversations forward after they return home.
.jpg)
Jason also sees storytelling as a way to empower the next generation. He recalls how safe and connected his own childhood felt – running between aunties’ houses on Minjerribah and exploring the bush – and how his father made it his mission to keep people connected to the island.
Today, Jason hopes that by teaching painting and language, young Bundjalung people will grow up with the same sense of belonging. “We want that next generation to continue and feel that sense of belonging and connection to who they are,” he says.
The Dreamtime Art Trail
Jason’s philosophy comes to life on the Dreamtime Art Trail — a day spent walking, listening, and creating on Bundjalung Country.
Beginning on the sands of Fingal Headland, guests are welcomed to Country — and, on the elevated experience, through the gentle smoke of lemon-myrtle leaves in a traditional ceremony.
Jason leads the group along the headland’s coastal trails, sharing stories of saltwater people and the old songlines that still echo through this place. Every plant and rock holds meaning; every step reveals a deeper way of seeing.
.jpg)
The day continues with a shared meal at a local restaurant before Jason guides guests through an art workshop using ochre and natural materials — painting with Country itself. It’s an experience that becomes part storytelling, part meditation.
Those on the elevated journey travel further into the Tweed Valley for a plantation and fruit-tasting tour, a long alfresco orchard lunch, and a paddock-to-bottle tasting — celebrating the region’s living culture and produce.
By day’s end, many say they see this region's culture and beauty in an entirely new light. Knowing the stories behind it changes how you walk through it.
As Jason says, “Visitors can already see the beauty of this place — but I want them to feel that deeper connection, to take a little bit of that magic with them when they go home.”
