Minjerribah Culture and Country: with Elisha Kissick

date
written by

Elisha Kissick is a proud Quandamooka and Yulu-Burri-Ba woman living on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), Queensland. She is the founder of Yura tours, offering immersive cultural experiences on the island, and the host of our Australia in a Day experience.

We're deeply grateful for Elisha, a true salt-of-the-earth connector and storyteller - passing down traditions to deepen appreciation for place, culture, and Country.

“”

“People often say that afterwards they can’t walk through the bush the same way again.

That’s what I want: for people to feel connected to place, to carry those conversations forward.

I’m not here only to entertain. I want to shift perceptions of our people and our land.”

Elisha Kissick

Childhood, Connection and Community

On Minjerribah, childhood often looks like salt-dried hair, long days at the beach, and cousins tumbling together across the sand. For Elisha Kissick, it was all of that and more.

“There were about 15 of us first cousins, all really close in age. Straddie was pretty much our playground. We’d cruise around, play at the lakes and the springs, and bounce from auntie to auntie during the holidays to get hot chip money.”

Elisha’s upbringing was marked by a fierce but warm closeness - both to her family and the island. Even when her parents moved to the mainland to pursue work, Minjerribah always remained an anchor.

“We’d always come back for the holidays and weekends. It was safe, because everyone raised each other’s kids. If you got into mischief, your parents knew before you even got home.”

Much of Elisha’s connection to culture comes through her father, who was, in her words, “a connector.” She remembers his instinct to bridge distances:

“Dad made it his mission to keep people connected to the island. He’d drive out to visit mobs in Toowoomba, Charleville, and even Tasmania. That shaped me - my love to travel - but also grounded me in the importance of people and connection.”

Her grandparents carried the role of cultural anchors. “Nan (Aunty Margaret) and Grandad (Uncle Pat) were natural hosts. They were part of every organisation here. Nan founded the NSI housing co-op, involved in getting the YBB medical centre going and she was the founding director of the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in council from 1993 right up to her final years with us.

Nobody came to the island without sitting down with them first, having a cup of tea and a yarn.”

Aunty Margaret Iselin & Uncle Pat Iselin

Through them, Elisha learned in the traditional way - by doing.

She remembers gathering paperbark as a child, not knowing why until years later. “Nan didn’t tell us at the time, but we were actually collecting sanitary pads for the old grannies who wouldn’t use plastic. It was women’s business. That’s how our teachings are passed on - not written down, but through being on country, learning hands-on.”

Yura to New Beginnings

Elisha left Minjerribah at 17 to study hotel management in Canberra, later travelling widely and working in mental health. But the island called her back. “I was burnt out from managing high-needs programs and Dad convinced me to move home. I started working back in tourism - festivals, food trucks, dancers - and then when Covid hit, I rethought my career path, wanted to start my own business, and launched Yura Tours.”

The name, she explains, was both warm and strategic. “Yura means hello. I was being a bit cheeky because people were already Googling it in the Redlands. So I thought, why not? Hello Tours. It’s welcoming, easy to say, and it just fits.”

The first years were lean. “I’d left a high-paying corporate job and made far less in my first year doing Yura Tours. I almost quit. But then word-of-mouth spread. I wasn’t tech savvy, but people who knew me started pushing and supporting me. Then the five-star reviews and media coverage followed. It just took off.”

Women’s Business

For Elisha, tourism is more than hosting - it’s an opportunity to shift narratives. “For too long, the industry had one image of Aboriginal tourism: a blackfella standing with a spear, lighting a fire, throwing a boomerang. It was dominated by men. But there’s so much more. As a woman, I can talk about women’s business - the plants, the gathering spaces, the soft side of culture that hasn’t been promoted for the last 20 years.”

This shift isn’t just representational; it creates comfort. “Women’s groups come on my tours and feel safe. They see it’s led by a woman and they open up. It’s a different way of learning.”

Of Sand & Sea

Elisha is Yulu-Burri-Ba—“sand and sea people.” For her, that identity is lived daily. “I’m a saltwater Murri. The sand and the ocean are our everyday life. We don’t need to pay for entertainment - we’re always at the beach.

The doctors even joke they can tell the island kids because they’ve always got sand in their ears.”

Animals and seasons also shape her storytelling. “Everything we do revolves around the bush and the animals. They tell us when seasons change, when the fish are coming. Spiritually and practically, they’ve always been part of us.”

Experience Australia in a Day

Within Reveling’s Australia in a Day heli-tour, Elisha’s role is pivotal. After soaring over Moreton Bay and touching down on Minjerribah, guests meet her for a Welcome to Country at a sacred tea-tree lake. From there, she leads them through Quandamooka heritage, shares her family’s stories, and opens the door to a slower rhythm - swimming, walking, and gathering over a beachside picnic.

She hopes guests leave with more than memories. “A lot of people say afterwards they can’t walk through bush the same way again - they notice plants, they think about their uses.

That’s what I want: for people to feel connected to place, to carry conversations forward. I’m not here just to entertain. I want to shift perceptions about our people and our land.”

Stories Shaped for Generations

Elisha is modest about the future, but clear in her purpose. “For me, it’s about keeping my grandparents’ stories alive for my kids. If I can make a living from that, it’s because of the work they did before me. Tourism gives me the platform, but really, it’s about connection. It always comes back to people.”

On Minjerribah, with the sea in her ears and sand beneath her feet, Elisha continues to do what her family has always done - hold space, tell stories, and make sure no visitor leaves without feeling welcomed.
